The task for the Young Designer of the Year Award 2021

Below is a brief overview of what you will be required to produce when competing in the Young Designer of the Year Award. Once you have entered, you will receive the full version of the task and all supporting documents.

For your chance to win a €3,000 cash prize, a special experience with Oceanco and further your career in the superyacht industry by winning this globally recognised award, read on!

Setting the scene for the task

You are a junior designer working on a freelance basis for a small yacht design company. A previous client is in the market for a new 90-metre yacht that will allow him to fulfil his passion of cruising the higher latitudes. During the period of lock down the client and his captain have been quantifying his needs and, alarmed by Global Warming issues, would like to include onboard facilities to accommodate meaningful scientific research, as well as the relevant tenders, helicopter and other equipment necessary for such a mission. You have been asked to design the exterior of the yacht to suit the tasks in hand and also create a general arrangement plan for the interior of this new explorer vessel. It is a serious and realistic task that calls for a combination of imagination and design skill, together with a degree of research and an understanding of how this yacht’s interior should be best laid out to meet the client’s requests.
